The Krakow Oxygen Home architecture competition invited participants to respond to a profound social crisis in the Krakow region of Poland. A reliance on coal-burning furnaces has left the region inundated with increasing instances of asthma, chronic lung disease and lung cancer, due to the extremely high levels of air pollution. The competition brief called for the design of a care center for lung cancer patients as part of the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Institute of Oncology.

1st place was awarded to a design team from Iran - Nima Nian and Behdad Heydari - whose project expanded the performance of the courtyard typology across scales. The 2nd place team - Paul Jones and Chris Brown - comes from the UK, and incorporated a lattice roof structure that unifies the activity and function of several buildings while mediating environmental conditions. 3rd place goes to Cameron Kollath from the USA, whose project’s linear plan organized an enfilade among rooms along a central circulation axis of Bror Hansson Park and dividing the site in half.

The jury chose winning entries that resonated with the ambition of the brief, singling out projects that recognized the sensitivity to public and private relation. The top three designs integrated with the nearby park and took into consideration the neighbouring institute of oncology. Those chosen as winners were done so for the singularity of their architectural vision of a healthful, sustainable environment.
